Photos of State Pier offshore wind construction site Posted on November 29, 2023November 29, 2023 by Judy Benson Ulysses Hammond, interim executive director of the Connecticut Port Authority, led a tour on Nov. 20 of State Pier in New London, where components of the South Fork offshore wind project are being staged.Dozens of turbine tower sections await transport to the South Fork construction site, 35 miles from State Pier.The nacelles for the turbines will house the equipment that converts wind energy into electricity.The tubine blades and tower sections are being shipped by barge to the construction site. The 12 turbines are expected to begin generating power by the end of 2023 or early 2024.CT Sea Grant Associate Director Nancy Balcom, second from left, and Director Sylvain De Guise, 2nd row, center, were among those who participated in the tour. The work at State Pier included filling in a section of the Thames River and adding substructure to make enlarge and strengthen the area for the wind farm components.
