The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization have released Report of the Expert Meeting on Food Safety for Seaweed: Current Status and Future Perspectives, which names Connecticut Sea Grant’s Anoushka Concepcion as one of 17 experts contributing to the document.
Concepcion, aquaculture extension specialist for CT Sea Grant and associate extension educator for UConn, is the co-author of Seaweed Production and Processing in Connecticut: A Guide to Understanding and Controlling Potential Food Safety Hazards, with CTSG Associate Director Nancy Balcom and Kristin DeRosia-Banick, formerly of the state Department of Agriculture Bureau of Aquaculture. The 2020 document, the first state or federal safety guide for seaweed, is cited in the UN/WHO report as a key information source. The seaweed safety guide can be found here.
