Federal funds will enhance aquaculture education, kelp farming
Two federal grants totaling almost $600,000 will help launch two initiatives considered crucial to the long-term viability of the state’s aquaculture industry. The grants will fund a two-year project to assess aquaculture workforce development needs and a mobile lab to support the seaweed industry.
Connecticut’s Sandy Shores: An Introduction to the Geology, Ecology, Plants and Animals
Juliana Barrett, Ralph Lewis, Judy Benson, Nancy Balcom and Diana Payne. This 130-page guide provides explanatory text about the ecology, geology, common species and why Connecticut’s sandy beaches differ from many others along the Atlantic seaboard with dozens of figures and color photos.

Discovering the joys of fishing & shaping a waterfront park
On a sunny Saturday morning the Bridgeport community gathered at Knowlton Park for a “Let’s Go Fishing!” event on Aug. 19. Residents of all ages angled into the art of fishing as part of a unique initiative to activate the waterfront and gather insights for the future “Sliver by the River” community waterfront park.
Sen. Blumenthal: feds should stop buying single-use plastics
In an appearance in New London on Aug. 18, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal called for the federal government to phase out the purchase of single-use plastic items, like bottles, straws, wrappers and take-out containers, and microplastics.

Contaminants of emerging concern are increasingly detected in surface water and groundwater, posing risks to drinking water and aquatic life. Since 2020, Sea Grant has been building its CEC-focused research portfolio and supporting projects that serve locally-derived information needs.
