Despite 300 pages of data, maps and listings of the ecological resources and human uses of Long Island Sound, the inventory created as the foundation for the first-ever marine spatial plan for the estuary isn’t yet complete. At least that’s the view of two of the speakers at the public hearing May 8 on the draft version of the Long Island Sound Blue Plan Resource and Use Inventory.

UConn students in the “Climate Resilience and Adaptation: Municipal Policy and Planning” class this spring had real-world experiences helping towns meet the challenges of rising sea levels and more frequent and intense storms, After spending the fall semester learning how climate change is impacting local communities, they spent the spring semester applying what they learned in individual towns.
New resource will aid residents with hurricane preparations
When the annual hurricane season peaks next fall, residents of four shoreline towns in Connecticut are expected to have access to a new resource to help them better prepare for a coastal storm emergency.

Public hearing scheduled on Long Island Sound Blue Plan inventory
A public hearing on the Long Island Sound Blue Plan Resource and Use Inventory will take place at the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Marine Headquarters, 333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme on May 8, 2018, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Conference Room Building 3.
Workshop focuses on messages about coastal ocean acidification
Coastal regions that are some of the most productive areas for fish and shellfish harvests are seeing changes in water chemistry that are in part associated with atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide. What those changes will mean for coastal communities and deciding how best to respond to them was the purpose of a three-day workshop April 10-12.
Long Island Sound Mentor Teacher applicants sought
Connecticut Sea Grant is accepting applications for four Long Island Sound Mentor Teachers (LISMT) for the LISMT program in Connecticut. Pairs of teachers from each of the following grade level bands are encouraged to apply: K-8 and 9-12.
Projects to advance knowledge of LIS water quality, marine life

Congratulations are in order for Robert Pomeroy, CT Sea Grant extension specialist in aquaculture and fisheries, after the announcement that a journal article he co-authored has been chosen for an award by the Editorial Board of the Journal of the World Aquaculture Society.
